Check the Mounting Arrangement
Count the holes in the sink or countertop and note whether an escutcheon or cover plate is present. A one-hole faucet may fit a multi-hole sink with the correct plate, but a wide-set or bridge faucet may require a particular hole arrangement. Take a photo from above and another from below.
Inspect the Connections
Look at the supply lines and shutoff valves without loosening anything. Note whether the connections appear wet, green, rusty, bent, or difficult to reach. If a valve is already leaking or will not close, mention it before the appointment because the faucet replacement may depend on that valve working properly.
Consider Clearance
Measure or estimate the space beneath the sink, especially if the cabinet contains a disposal, water filter, pullout shelves, or a drawer. Above the sink, check for a backsplash, window ledge, shelf, or cabinet that could limit handle movement. A faucet must work comfortably after it is installed, not merely fit the opening.
Review the Replacement
If you have selected a faucet, keep its model information, instructions, mounting hardware, and included supply lines together. Confirm whether the faucet has a separate sprayer, soap dispenser, touch control, or electrical component. If you are still choosing, describe how you use the sink and what matters most, such as reach, clearance, or simple controls.
Prepare the Work Area
Clean out the cabinet and remove fragile or valuable items. Have towels available, but do not attempt to loosen stuck fittings just to prepare. If water is actively escaping, close the shutoff valves if they work normally. When the leak cannot be controlled, treat it as an urgent plumbing issue rather than waiting for a routine installation.
What to Explain When You Call
Tell the provider whether the request is for a new faucet, a replacement, a suspected leak, or help deciding between repair and replacement. Share photos and explain any recent changes in flow or temperature. Clear information helps the provider anticipate parts and identify whether another plumbing issue may be involved.
